Alicante Designation of Origin was established in 1957, is divided into two divisions: The Navy and the Vinalopó.
Its vineyards are an extension of 14,256 hectares and with 50 registered wineries. Its soils are limestone, without any organic presence. It enjoys a Mediterranean climate with continental climate trend. Its rated as very good vintages are: 1987, 1990, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004, and as the excellent 2006.
The production of Alicante include Monastrell grapes, Tempranillo, Bobal, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah. And the white grapes are the Plant Fine, Merseguera, Chardonnay, Verdil, Sauvignon Blanc, Airen and Macabeo.
